Igiss recently put forth the option of allowing us to select (or possibly create) additional Themes (color schemes, etc.) for Cyrodiil Forums. For a recap of the discussion go to the original post: Winter news and updates.

This topic is a combination between a contest and a brainstorm. Post your ideas for a brand new Logo for Cyrodiil Forums and additional ideas for customizing or adding new Themes to the site. Post your ideas and WIP images here. Feel free to comment on each other's ideas, combine ideas, and improve your own works based on the suggestions of other members. There will be no official vote but if the quality of work submitted is of high enough quality, it may be chosen for use on the site, with or without additional editing.

By posting on this thread you are agreeing to allow your work to be used by this website, with or without changing the work. I'm no lawyer, but essentially, if you post an idea here, don't try to sue us or expect any compensation for using it later. Your reward is to have your idea used and digitally published. We will not intentionally abuse your work or claim exclusive rights to it but it could potentially be used as our official logo, as a graphic anywhere on the site, or on banner ads promoting this website in the future. If you have a serious issue with how we use your work, contact the website administrator or me (DM8954) and we'll do our best to accomodate your request... but if you're the type of person who might have this sort of issue, don't post here in the first place. We (I) make no gaurantees.

Anyways, pseudo-legal business out of the way, lets give this site a new personality! The goal is to graphically represent Cyrodiil Forums to the world. Maybe it's just a matter of choosing an appropriate font and adding some effects to it, or maybe it's a fully designed 'company' logo. We'll keep refining everyone's work and ideas until we come up with a few great ideas and then go from there.

Let's get this brainstorm started!

Logo...

How about the outline of the imperial city with Elder-scroll style writing in front.

Its something that says 'Cyrodiil' rather than 'Elder Scrolls' and isn't too 'oblivion'.

OK. I really should have gone to bed instead of finishing this... but I just couldn't stop.

So, first is an example of my proposed Title/logo using the existing theme. (Thanks for the City/Tower idea, Reep)

Clicking will give you a full-scale example.

Next is an alternate version of the title bar. I have about 8-12 options for different characters...I'll post them when I finish them (unless no one likes this part of the idea). I think we could have this version with the standard blue colors and a "dark version" in mostly black, red, and white. We'd just switch out the daytime sky in the logo with the oblivion-gate-sky background.

Now, I can't decide if there should be a different theme per character logo or if we could have it change randomly each time a page is loaded. If the random change is a possibility then we would need a version of the theme for dial-up computers... which means picking a single, static character per low-res theme (1 day & 1 night).

If you look closely, I made the head of the character pierce the border. I think that gives it more depth and interest... but might be more difficult to put into the code of the site. Anyways, this is just a brainstorm so logistics can be worked out later.

Now, my other idea was in changing the other icons on the site. For the main page icons for new posts [] with coins (instead of my previous idea of the Oblivion symbol) like these: (old) (new). Another option I was hoping for was animation... again, this comes down to whether we have specific dial-up options or not.

You may also notice, in the full scale example above, that there are two different icon sizes. I made 2 sizes: small (32px - to match the existing size) and large (50px - to fill more of the empty space and give better resolution on the coin.
-
The coins aren't as crisp and clean as the default version but I think they fit the theme of the forums pretty well. I created the animated coins using images from the internet of the official real-life Septim that ships with the special collectors edition of the game and the edge of an American Quarter with some color and contrast tweeks and lots of stretching. I scaled it down after animating. Here it is full scale:
[Sorry, I liked the end result and had to show it off!]

Another change I might suggest is changing the stars (below the user avatar in a post) into gemstones. This would be another simple change to make. We'd just have to pick colors that would fit each theme (light & dark) and not blend in. [The current system has different color stars for each type of user (regular, moderator, administrator) I think Diamond (white), Ruby (red), and Emerald (green) would each stand out against either sky blue or black. Diamond should be Administrator (Igiss)... and whichever one looks better in both themes should be for general users.

Don't forget to submit ideas for changing each of these icons:
We don't have to change them at all, since they are very efficient as they are... but if we can do it just as well with an icon that matches the theme, even better.

So, let me know what you think about my ideas for the new logo. Any changes in font, tweeks I should make, errors I missed, or reasons we should throw it out all together and do something better. Just let me know. You won't hurt my feelings and all suggestions have a chance of improving the end result. Let's hear it... and submit ideas of your own, too!

One thing that I really want to see: If we are going to have a new layout, PLEASE have the option of keeping this one, because I don't really want to use a different layout. xD

Anyway, I like your ideas on the banner, but I think that there is way too much empty space there. We could probably make the height a little bigger, so you could make the quality of the images better. I might whip up my own version, if you don't mind. I like the idea of having different options of characters, though.

One last thing: I could probably come up with a simple layout, but that really difficult right now because I don't know which parts you can edit and how.. I make layouts often for other RPG sites on Proboards, so I know what I like to see on a layout. =P

Posting your own version and ideas is what this topic is all about. Please do.

As for the current layout... personally, I'm proposing to use this same layout just with different graphics and alternate color options.

Making your own layout for this would involve html and php, as far as I know. It might be easier to pick a layout, whether you like the colors or not, and adapt that. It's a lot easier to just change the graphics than the whole layout.... but you're free to explore that too, since this is brainstorming. I think there is a template generator on the SMF site that can help you get started.

I'm not sure how tall to make the title. I expanded it from the basic text version. I know there's technically no limit but that title is at the top of every page and I don't want to take away from the content spaces too much. Another reason there's so much blank space is to accommodate different screen resolutions. There will be a centered graphic and the character portion will be pushed all the way to the left. That way it will work no matter what your screen is set to. [Also, it's just a temporary graphic... I'd like to make it wider and use a panoramic shot of the land.] We can make it a bit wider and still make it suitable for smaller screens, though.

Hopefully I'll have some time to edit a dark version for everyone to critique later on.
